After four years of working with individual artists in my program, the dots between fellowship, my focus moving forward is working with funders who grant awards to individual artists and helping those artists use that funding to create a foundation that will carry them over many years.
Little support is granted to help people navigate the financial services industry in a way that leaves them well prepared now or for their future. People need ongoing support and education in this area. For example, some of the problems I have encountered in working with individuals are: funds in retirement accounts that are sitting in cash, not invested--undermining the sole reason to invest for the future; lack of understanding of how social security works and not having enough credits to qualify; tax liability from failing to do taxes or not paying over many years; and not understanding how to qualify for a mortgage or other type of loan with 1099 income.
All of these items hinder an artist’s ability to adequately set themselves up for a sustainable present and future. Through individual coaching, I offer artists ongoing support so that they can implement the steps needed to create long term stability.

In 2025, I will be working with the SHIFT and LIFT grantees on how the proceeds from their award can create sustainability over the long term.
